Why Under-Educated Democrats Bother Me
By Conor | October 9, 2008
Many of my smartest friends are Democrats and I truly enjoy listening to their views and discussing their ideas on politics. I do think they understand politics better than me, even if they will not be able to convert me to their side on the political spectrum. While they may disagreed with the war in Iraq, I do know they support our troops and love this country.
The problem with the Democratic party is that somewhere down the line of liberalism, the mentality often turns against supporting our country.
I went to the movies last weekend with my girlfriend to see “Eagle Eye”, the latest cyber-terrorism action flick. Before the movie began, the National Guard ran their latest music video advertisement, featuring Kid Rock and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in song called “Warrior”. I thought it was a great advertisment throwing out catch terms like “Loyalty”, “Team”, “Dedication”, and providing inspiration for serving our country both domestically (showing the National Guard’s support in the San Diego fires) and internationally.
Half way through the advertisement, a guy a few seats away from me booed the ad loudly. For a split second I thought he was booing our troops before I realized he was some jackass Santa Monica liberal who does not understand the difference between supporting our troops and supporting the administrations decision to go to war. Either way, it came across to me as not supporting our troops and thus I felt like decking the guy. However, I think my girlfriend gave the guy an even worse look than I did, so I took the more responsible route of being a bigger man and letting her kick his as for me. She was kind enough to give the guy some pity. He’s a lucky guy, I think she would have crushed him. Have you seen the moves they do in those step-aerobic-punchmaster-spinning-defense-yoga classes these days?
This is my problem with under-educated Democrats, however. At least I know that almost all conservatives are patriotic. Democrats that do not understand what they are complaining about tend to make themselves enemies of the common American good quicker than Republicans. They also give a bad name to those more intelligent than them that are often chosen to represent their views.
I respect anyone who cares to argue with me about our decision to be in Iraq. I lose that respect immediately when that person fails to support our troops that are there.

Maybe he was booing Kid Rock? Though I really like that Werewolves of London/Sweet Home Alabama lovechild he put out this summer…

I think a lot of even educated liberals don’t so much support the troops as pity them, and see them as coerced or duped by the big, bad military. (Hence booing the National Guard as an institution?) I think that’s because they don’t actually know many soldiers (and the Vietnam-era banishment of ROTC from many college campuses surely exacerbates this).

Nuts’s,
First, yes, great song. And, yes, that is a good point about knowing soldiers. I am sure there are very few volunteers from Santa Monica heading into the military.

I couldn’t agree more, and deal with many of these people everyday living in venice beach.
In my opinion if you dont support our troops than get out of the country. Its pretty simple. Im tired of hearing people bitching about this and that as they are walking around with their frappucino and carrying a rat on a leash with the ability to do whatever the hell they want. They fail to realize that living in a free country has awarded this ability hence making their life a contradiction.
With regards to our troops if you want an unbiased/ bi-partisan idea of what is actually taken place on the ground and the sacrficices that are being made, read this blog: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/ not cnn. No political spin.

From an Irishman living in the uk
If I was American I’d definitely vote for the democrats. The war in Iraq was always going to be a Vietnam mark II.
The republican admin lied abot the reasons for going to war (as did the uk)and they both falsified evidence. Dumbest move imaginable.
Why didn’t the UK and USA get rid of Sadam years ago instead of deciding to sell him weapons instead - most of which he defaulted on the payment for. Sadam was an ally of the west with regard to his war with Iran.
Sooner the USA gets rid of the ultra right the better. Obama is far from perfect but the only sane option imo.
