Tehran In Pictures

This photo collage from Iran is incredible.  The worst part about it is that the Iran government has shut down many communications, including text messaging.  They are not able to see these pictures, although I have heard Twitter is still working and people are using that to communicate.

The biggest news is that the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has called for an official inquiry into the allegations of election “irregularities”.  He initially supported the election results, but his change of mind has been seen as a huge boost for the opposition supporters.

UPDATE:  I would like to point out that while I think the election process is important for democracy in Iran, we must take the final result into account.  I agree strongly with the points President Obama made today in his CNN interview.

CNBC:  What are you watching for in the handling of those protests and in the investigation of the results to-and how will that influence the dialogue that you seek to have with Iran?

Obama:  Well, I think first of all, it’s important to understand that although there is amazing ferment taking place in Iran, that the difference between Ahmadinejad and Mousavi in terms of their actual policies may not be as great as has been advertised. Either way, we were going to be dealing with an Iranian regime that has historically been hostile to the United States, that has caused some problems in the neighborhood and is pursuing nuclear weapons.

….

The second thing that I think’s important to recognize is that the easiest way for reactionary forces inside Iran to crush reformers is to say it’s the US that is encouraging those reformers.
