Public Domain Company Earnings Results
TheDomains has a great review of the earnings results posted by Dark Blue Sea (DBS), the publicly-listed domain company that owns Fabulous.com (parking) and over 600,000 generic domains.
A few highlights:
- For the quarter ending June 2007, a year ago they generated $2,051,000 in parking revenue…
- …for the most recent quarter ending June 30, 2008, parking revenue dropped to $1,143,000
- It is unlikely the 1.5 cent fully franked dividend paid as the final dividend for 2006/07 will be maintained
- Domain sales in the June quarter were approximately US$2.8 million, significantly better than both the March quarter (US$1 million) and the corresponding quarter in 2007 (US$640,000)
Dark Blue Sea lists four key factors driving the direct navigation industry at the moment:
- The weaker economic environment in the US
- Generally fewer advertisers (as observed by Dark Blue Sea) leading to a reduction in bid prices and coverage and hence overall yield received by Dark Blue Sea
- Changes to the way that online advertisers can place advertisements via the advertiser interfaces of the major search advertising networks; and
- An overall uncertain strategic landscape stemming from the unsuccessful takeover bid for Yahoo by Microsoft and the subsequent outsourcing of search advertising to Google by Yahoo.
