It is fairly simple logic. Safety at schools should be a high priority. While most think of crime when regarding that safety, this LA Times article points out the health risks from pollution caused by the LA School District opening up new schools right next to freeways.
The worst part is that this is not a new concern. There is already a law prohibiting this, yet the building still continues.
“A 2003 state law prohibits school districts from building campuses within 500 feet of a freeway, unless the district can mitigate the pollution or determines that space limitations are so severe that there are no other options.”
How are they getting approval for these schools? I know when we tried to do a build out on our office in Santa Monica it took months to get all of the necessary approvals from local governing bodies. And we posed no threats and broke no rules…that was just standard procedure. For these schools to be allowed to be built uncontested is quite surprising to me. Somebody is either getting paid off or the public is just not fighting back hard enough. I know where several Police Stations are located (no, I have not been in any of them) and I do not see why the stations and schools could not swap locations. To me, it seems like it would be more beneficial for a police station to be located next to a freeway.
