Hulu

I was granted access to the Beta version of the new site Hulu.com.  I wanted to post a quick review before spending more time with it over the next few weeks.

Domain: Of course I’ll start with the domain.  They have a quality four-letter dot-com domain (LLLL.com) that is easy to remember and spell. However, it does not really describe what they are doing.  Hopefully they can make a brand name for themselves and do not end up as a baby-sounding name lost amongst all of the others.

Content: The content they have is truly amazing.  They have full episodes of many of the premier TV shows right now (for instance The Office or the Simpsons).  I’m not sure what progress they are making for getting more, but The Office alone is good enough for me.

Technology: The site looks absolutely amazing.  I haven’t run into any bugs yet and the quality of the video is excellent.  The functionality is fairly simple and seems to use a combination of Flash and Web 2.0 at its best.

Edge: With this site, you have the ability to cut out clips of shows you enjoy and post to your sites.  For example:

Overall:  This is a great new site.  I will definitely use it to post clips of my favorite quotes from The Office onto this blog from time to time.  I do not know how long it will take for them to get out of Beta and to the mass public, but so far I am sold.

Quote of the Day: Humans and the Environment

“Human beings are viruses that are killing their host.”

This is disputed, but it does make me think of the Matrix possibilities.

A GreenTaxi Ride: A Violent Year-End

GreenTaxi’s thoughts on:

  • Korean Politics: Imagine if we saw this similar brawl situation in Congress.  Sadly, this happens often in Korea and Taiwan.
  • MLB: Okay, so what seems like half the league has their performance enhanced.  The question of what to do with each half will be sorted, but what about the records for the past 10+ years?  I say, clear them all, write clear rules, and move on already.
  • Bank Earnings: GS, MS, and Bear all report this week.  Only GS seems to have profited from the subprime collapse…where are all the other winners?
  • American Gladiators: My pick for comeback program of the year.  I don’t think there is a program that defines my childhood more.  On that note, enjoy a Malibu moment

Domain Education: Domain Examples

One of the best ways to learn is by looking at examples.  To look at examples of what makes a good domain and a bad domain, we can go to GoodURLBadURL.com.  The site is nothing more than good and bad URL’s, with pictures snapped of their use, and a brief explanation of why they are good or bad.

The domains on this site usually are just referring to business domains, so we are usually looking at non-generic, late-to-the-game, ASCII domains.  However, if you look at the good domains, you can realize that there are still great opportunities out there for good domains.  Don’t take the easy way out like this one, www.love21222.com/terms.html:

Instead, go for something quality with a clear message such as WhyDietHungry.com:
