NYC’s Green Taxi Efforts Halted
I previously had reported how New York City had put into place a law that would require all taxi’s to be hybrid vehicles by 2012. The plan was aggressive and the stats were staggering.Unfortunately, US District Judge Paul Crotty has halted this plan, ruling that regulation of fuel emissions standards fall under federal authority. The city is considering an appeal.
The Judge also ruled that implementation of the regulations would not be costly to the taxi industry.
I’m not sure how it could be any more costly than before, when the decision was made for these adjustments. I am sure what he meant was that the city does not have the money to pay for this any more. On the back of the jobs losses and, effectively, tax losses that the city will be taking with Wall Streets layoffs this year, it is no wonder they did not adjust sooner.
This is just another hit for the environment and green industry, which will continue to take a beating through this recession as businesses pare back green efforts to save money.
