Sooo… the only way you’re ever allowed to have a negative opinion about something is to have done it yourself?

So you’re not allowed to dislike any books if you’re not a writer, not allowed to dislike any movies if you’re not a director (obviously)

And I sure as hope no one ever has found the actions of a US President to be flawed, because not a lot of people in the country have been presidents. : /

every body i talk to seams to love and like you said desiree the millions of dollors thay spend on special effects could of ben spent on plot and makeing the movie at least watchable avatar was WAY WAY over hyped the god farther was a grate movie becouse it had a grate plot it had live actors (avatar is all computer generated)and the god farther is a all round grate movie i wood watchem’ over and over (if i had them on DVD )

Altough I was a bit disappointed since critics talked it up a little excessively, They continue to believe the film is a decent effort. My sister enjoyed it quite a bit though. To each their own.

It’s funny that most of the people over 40 that I talk to loved Avatar, whereas people under 30 are split on it. I don’t know if its cynicism of the younger generation, or just a product of not being sci-fi nerds who expect 2001: A Space Odyssey every time they see a movie. I thought it was a great movie, with very poignant messages, a few cliches here and there, but overall…very good. It’s no Godfather, but this blogger is taking it to the extreme. I guess 94% of TOP CRITICS on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as the Golden Globes and Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences disagreed with you. Oh, and all the people who went and saw it multiple times because they liked it, pushing the gross to 2.7 billion dollars.

Wow I’m so glad someone else feels the way I do. I didn’t like the movie either. Hollywood is wasting a lot of money on special effects and leaving out a good plot. I can watch a movie made ten years ago that moves me and enjoy it more than the dizzy spellbinding mode from special effects created today. Some people may like the special effects but I prefer a good plot. I just saw the trailer for inception and I got turned off from all of the special effects. It looks like watching that movie will be like being on a roller coaster ride. If I want that I’ll go to disney world.

This article is really just about the entertainment value of Avatar, and on the whole I agree with it. But the movie has most definitely made a splash, and I feel like most people I have talked to that enjoyed Avatar were missing a lot when they said that the message was good. I don’t normally care too much about what people think about movies, but in this case, I think that it is important to examine what exactly it is we are taking in an internalizing as a “good message”.

Apart from the fact that the plot of Avatar is totally cliched, I found it pretty offensive. The fictional native culture is put together from bits of other cultures around the world- from American Indian to East Asian, and are highly exoticized and sexualized. The Navi propagate stereotypes that paint all native cultures as peaceful, emotional, and extremely close to nature. While these are generally considered to be admirable qualities, and therefore not offensive, the fact that they are applied as such sweeping generalizations is dehumanizing and patronizing, and it reinforces the stereotypical image of the native that many Westerners have.

Essentially, the plot of this movie follows a white Marine who sets out to learn about the native culture, and eventually comes to realize the merits of the Navi. Along the way, he learns how to hunt, becomes closer to nature, has sex with the hottest member of their race, and proves himself to be an even better Navi than the real Navis. He, the white man, turns into the savior of the race, providing the missing piece that allows them to defeat their oppressors.

While on the surface, Avatar may be a movie championing protection of the environment and speaking out against colonialism, it is really furthering all that is wrong with the way people view native cultures, and putting the white man at the top of the food chain after all.

Poor movie, for the same reason that The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter are all bad movies. These movies import a fake, totally imaginative world onto the big screen, and the creators hope that their new manufactured world is perceived by the public as better than the actual world that exists. What’s disturbing is that so many movie watchers fall in love with the movie simply because they are attracted to the bogus world that was portrayed. People tend to like movies where the world seems to be better or cooler or more badass than than the real world we live in. In Avatar, we saw ten-foot blue creature-people play basketball, fly on dinosaur-type animals, defeat an army of human artillery and gunpower, etc. It all seemed really awesome, which is why people liked the movie. I, however, would rather see a movie about the real world that we live in. I don’t want to watch some fake crap straight out of the fantasies of Cameron’s head. That’s why I loved Titanic, but hated Avatar. One movie offered a real storyline with real people and real emotions. The other offered a predictable Hollywood storyline about some creatures that don’t exist on a planet that isn’t real. What about that should interest me, let alone anybody else???!!!

Well, this movie was so horrible that I literally walked out of the theater half way into it. I couldn’t bare the plot, I could care less about the acting, and I don’t watch a movie for its visual graphics, because, just about every dam video game I play makes avatar look like a pile of horse dung. Admittedly I think watching movies in the theater is pointless, I hate the theater experience, and I thought Avatar would be worth watching in the theater, that was a mistake.

Utter CRAP. The commercial swell has come and gone. It’s been spun and re-spun. Harsh words have been cast across this ‘little’ blog’. But I haven’t heard, read, or sounded a rebuttal to the Truth be told : “The Nays Have it”. The cash cow is just that. I giant pig of one man’s ego! Avitar is sunk (in every post-market if possible).

Given the oppertunity, The Blog members here at Green Taxi are capable of easily conguring a script worthy of the dollars dumped into this dreary albatross.

i thought this was incredible in it’s ability to be so utterly crap and still have the masses think it’s good.

i knew exactly what was going to happen from the start, and i even quoted lines before they were said!!

i enjoyed the scenery, but nothing else.

what is good about this story line. man goes into spy on a painfully red indian alien race, the muck hits the fan and he’s found out, he tries to explain the error of his ways as he now likes them and their way of life, they don’t like him he goes off then comes back and they like him again and he saves the day…. might have seen this before… but only ‘once’

I’m only young and have seen strait through this film. where are the days where a film is called good for it’s acting, plot, effects, music etc not just it’s hot chick and big explosions. i’m sorry but it takes more than that to entertain me. special effects is not enough!!

p.s. another thing, did anyone notice how the female pilots makeup was perfect all the way through the film? The people who makes these films know that 90% of the plant are idiots and will accept what they have been told as good, is good. Where as films like ‘no country for old men, or into the wild get over looked as they don’t have huge explosions in them.

I disagree. I thoroughly loved it. It created an entire amazing and beautiful world that completely sucked me in. Maybe it is bad to a sci-fi technology geek, but to an average person like me, it was wonderful. I can forgive them for some cheesy one-liners and obvious naming (unobtainium, pandora) because the overall message is important and relevant.

TRASH.

Rented it (Red Box) this evening and got what I paid for ($1). A total piece of Cameron garbage. Not worth the calories I spent sliding my debit card.

It reminded me of Dreamworks “The Haunting”. How the hell did Spielburg allow that abortion pass through such a newly touted organization? Utter nonsense.

Where are the writers? Can’t somone put a story together anymore? I dig the technology but I’m ashamed that this pile produced the numbers it did at the box office. Total, utter waste of toilet paper. I’ve never taken the time to comment on a movie online or otherwise, but feel a sense of relief to let this one go its own way – Down the Gutter.

not to mention the near 100 year old technique of rotoscopeing. like the first lotr (ralph bashki version)
its like mo-cap but with hand drawing.

not to mention the story and acting was crap.

the visuals were the exact same as star wars 3…which was way better. cgi does not make movies, case and point:Dark Knight, great acting great story, great visuals and stunts, and almost no cgi. Chris Nolan i by far superior in that way.

I could see children liking it, although it could have been 2 hours shorter.

Where did all that money go? I do character design/3d graphics/animation for a livin, not to bust on the people in my circle, but other then paying the actors, I can’t see why this film was as expensive as it turned out to be, unless there was a lot of dicking around aka no real planning and lots of cut scenes.

It’s not groundbreaking or superior in any way whatsoever.
The story was lame, visually it was very average, the acting seemed dull. Character design was lame as hell. …The robot walker’s animation did not make any sense at all, especially during that last fight scene… a robot moving at completely different speeds each scene then using a knife… wtf? lol

I got up to pee twice this movie and when I came back I honestly didn’t care what happened.

Avatar was not a good movie. I for one need some sort of intellectual ORIGINAL material to help me. And Avatar was far from both of those categories. I am very imagination and am in fact doing an art scholarship solely on surrealism. But Avatar had no imagination it was merely a recycled generic Hollywood script, with a big budget. Really driving nine inch nails into my eyes is more creative and enjoyable than this. Saying we don’t have an imagination because we didn’t decide to “frantically touch our genital organs” over the ALIEN sex scene is just F*cking retarded. Sorry, you can like it, I don’t care that your opinion and this is mine.

I think Avatar was a good movie to watch in a theater especially if its 3d, but otherwise its not as good as another big flick. The colonel is crazy, the storyline is not very clear from the beginning and some things i just cant buy…for eg. if they want to blow up navi people’s habitat ultimately then why they even have to send avatar to study them..

What was so imaginative about “Avatar”. Besides Cameron’s Self-Serving “I’m right everybody else is wrong political attitude.” I could not get lost in the storyline. And What I would have liked to have seen was this; If those head been the real military those hostile slimey green ugly gross aliens had been going up against; they would have been splatted like “Green Splooge” outside of the first half-hour and the “Jake” character would have been figuring out to smuggle that unimginative “Unobtanium” Back to earth so he could make a couple of billion dollars underneath his bosses back. He probably would have stuffed in the body of one of those dead NAVI’ as the they were shipped back to earth as Museum pieces. Then how story would have involved him dealing with Smugglers and otheer elements of the Cloak and dagger.

I know what I wrote is sick. But I Can’t believe all the greed Cameron has and delibrately and uneffectively tries to hide it from the world. And I can’t believe I spent $15 to see that shit! The SouthPark Version a Thousand times better.

I haven’t even seen the film yet, mainly due to the media hysteria and noting that the Avatar fanbase was almost identical to the Transformers 3 one (sadly), but when I read the plot on Wikipedia (I have to work on that in class) I was like “omg wtf is that, that sound so much like a bunch of cheap cliches, is that fake ? damn all the media and people went to see it, that page must be fake, let’s see other source (like imdb), it must have some hidden message or second-meaning stuff”. Ouch. Truth hurts.

Then came the Pocahontas in Space picture. And the video mashup. I’m doomed.

I’m supposed to talk about the film in my english class, but I think I won’t be able to resist laughing when I’ll have to talk about the plot or the film’s success, it’s like talking seriously about an American Pie, a The Naked Gun or a Hot Shot movie without grinning, that’s just impossible hahah xD damn I need to work on that… let’s try the Jon St. John method :*deadbabiesdeadbabies* … hahah damnit I’m screwed haha xD

I AGREE. I cant believe that I spent money on that. I thought it was SO boring, it was actually 2 1/2 hours of the SAME THING. Everyone who said it was great obviously doesn’t know what a good movie is. Go watch Taxi Driver or Dances With Wolves (which is basically avatars plot, but actually interesting…) or Gone With the Wind. Learn what makes a good movie. Then watch Avatar again. You will be amazed how much it sucks.
