Los Angeles just experienced a 5.8 earthquake that was centered in Chino Hills.
It did not seem big enough to break anything around our apartment. I had a couple of picture frames tip over and heard a bit of a “crack“.
We were sitting in the loft of my apartment, which I would guess is not the most earthquake proof of structures. I made an immediate run for it and sprinted to the streets. I got to have a few minute conversation with neighbors I’ve never met before coming back inside. My brothers were a bit slower and just walked downstairs. One thing I learned from my boss who lived in Tokyo for 10 years was to get out of the building as fast as possible. In previous earthquakes in Honolulu and LA, I have seen him throw people out of the way to be the first one out the door. It is quite impressive, I must say.
So far, there have been no aftershocks. I imagine there will be a few and we already started a pool for how big the largest aftershock will be. My market is 3.2-3.4.
We have heard from friends so far that felt the earthquake in San Diego and Las Vegas.
On a side note, my brother registered ChinoHillsEarthquake.com within 10 minutes of the earthquake. His reaction time there was fantastic.
UPDATE: I was wrong, there have already been aftershocks. Within 25 minutes of the earthquake there have been at least 10 aftershocks, with the largest measuring 3.8. I lost the pool.
