Los Angeles gets more than 25% of it’s power from Arizona. Especially during the summer months.
Is a boycott of Arizona’s “turqoise jewelery and bolo ties” really worth it? Has Mayor Villaraigosa really thought this one through?

If Arizona really has the spine to follow through on this, it would be devastating for LA and potentially all of Southern California. I would imagine it would take about 1 hour of rolling blackouts for the citizens of LA to decide the boycott was a really, really bad idea.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday defiantly rejected a warning by a top Arizona utilities official that the state could cut off power to Los Angeles should the city proceed with its boycott of all things Arizona.
Whaaaaat? Shouldn’t Villaraigosa already have ordered the circuits opened and stopped receiving power from AZ voluntarily? If you’re going to boycott all things AZ shouldn’t that mean power too?
Immigration issues aside I hope AZ goes through with the threat or at the least when the time comes to renegotiate power rates tack on a “Revenue Lost to Boycott” tax for CA…although that might be stepping on Article 4 limitations. I suppose the feudin’ will give WA the opportunity to sell more power to CA so yay for us heh

Turns out that LA owns a minority stake in those Arizona electric utilities, so Arizona cannot really turn it off without LA’s approval.
Either way, you are correct. If LA is going to boycott Arizona then it should be Villaraigosa turning off the power anyway, not Arizona.
Arizona’s support from the rest of the nation is overwhelming. I think Villaraigosa is going to end up regretting this one.
Good points. Yes, LA a significant minority stake in these Arizona utilities and (and this is a big and) LA is their largest single customer. LA could buy power elsewhere, although it might cost more, but the Arizona utilities don’t have other customers for their power. This was always a stupid threat…LA is in the driver’s seat.
