Korea Police Raid Ssangyong Factory

Crazy story emerging out of Korea. The police are raiding a Ssangyong Motor Company factory that has been occupied by disgruntled laid off workers.

The workers have occupied the building for over 2 months now. The video makes it look like a war zone where they have set up barricades and are wearing makeshift armor.

The police began the raid yesterday and are still battling today. It is like an entire mini war being played out within this factory. Some of the beatings are pretty brutal.

The company, Ssangyong, entered bankruptcy protection in February due to a cash shortage. In April it announced it had to lay off 36 percent of its workforce. About 900 employees began occupying the factory on May 22nd in protest of the cuts.

I think it is fairly common for labor unions to perform sit-in’s and other forms of protest. But this is far too extreme. I don’t understand how this country expects to be upgraded to a developed economy with situations like these continuing to occur.
