Yes, today is my birthday.  While the celebrations are already in order, there is a side note here that comes back to the Internet and the next level of email spam.

I have received many “Happy Birthday” emails so far today, several of which have been from “e-card” type web sites that people have used.  Thank you, everyone, for your kind words.

However, I’ve noticed that I have received a large amount of extra spam to my personal email today.  Strangely, this is birthday email type spam.  I’m receiving email from websites with “.zip” and “.exe” attachments saying Happy Birthday, but it does not say the senders name anywhere.  I even received emails from and @hallmark.com address that includes these “.exe” attachments.

While I realize that not all of these may be spam, I’m sure several of the questionable emails do indeed contain viruses.  This is spam to the next level.  Not only are they sending viruses to your email, but they are targeting specific information about you, knowing the day of my birthday.  While I get hit by bank and credit card spam all of the time, I know that I do not have a Capital One account, so getting hit by a Capital One spam email does not affect me.  On my birthday, however, I actually expect these emails.

Scary indeed.  Next time you are receiving targeted email that you do not recognize the sender, beware of what you open.
