California has a law called WARN that requires companies with more than 75 employees to provide 60 days advance notice of a plant closing or mass layoff involving 50 or more employees.
Many companies abide by the rule for layoffs of less than 50 employees. If you work for a larger corporation it cannot hurt to keep an eye on the WARN system this year.
Want to find out if your company has reported any pending layoffs?
There are two ways:
- Use the Mercury News search tool for checking information that has been updated as of January 13, 2010.
- To keep an eye out for ongoing announcements, continue to check back ad the California EDD (Employment Development Department) WARN page. They list the WARN notices in PDF format down at the bottom of the page.
Quite a handy tool that I am sure many will use. If you know of these sort of filings and databases for other states, please post them in the comment section below.
