Don’t Believe China

Don’t believe everything you read from China.  Have a look at this article from the South China Morning Post, the largest newspaper in Hong Kong, titled “Blue Sky Greets Athletes in Beijing“.

Then have a look at the picture I received from a colleague today in Beijing.

Beijing, August 2008

Amazingly, this air quality was pronounced “good”, by national standards.  Makes you wonder what their standards are, huh?

Even worse, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao says it will stay this “good”.

Premier Wen Jiabao said China was a responsible country and would honour all of its international commitments, including one to host the “green Games”.

“Beijing will remain clean after the Olympics and the city will be clean for ever,” he said, in an apparent bid to ease concerns that smog would return after the temporary bans for the Games were lifted.

  • in their defense, there were 3 days of unusually clear skies and then it got bad again today.

that said, this whole olympics is a sham on a lot of levels. I have a feeling the athletics won’t be much of the story for the next 2 weeks, and instead it will be the pollution, speech restrictions and the like (and maybe that’s a good thing)

  • I agree it is turning into one big publicity stunt. But, I think the right news will reach the correct people. Those that wish to watch just for sports will filter their video for that. Those that want to get involved in the politics, environment, and free speech will gravitate to those articles. It is no different than Finance versus Politics every day here in the US.
