We received a gift certificate to this philanthropic educational cause, DonorsChoose.org, as a wedding gift. After spending some time on the site, I realize how incredible of a service this is as it allows donors to connect directly to the teachers and children for specific needs.
It combines micro-donations and personal interaction via a philanthropic channel for education, which is the obvious direction of financial and social innovation these days. Brillant.
While everyone could haphazardly get on there to try it out, what I’ve done is created a GreenTaxi Giving Page that truly embodies the GreenTaxi theme. I would love for any of you to support classroom projects I’ve chosen via that page.
I have chose math and science projects as well as literature projects. I have focused on Southern California schools spread out across all grades K-12. I prefer projects that fulfill core needs such as books, paper, pens/pencils, and even printers and printer cartridges. I avoided projects asking for digital cameras and laptops. While I know those would be great tools for classrooms, I feel students should have books and paper before they get the laptop.
The donations are tax-deductible and this program is well supported. Many of the projects I have chosen recieve “double impact” from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. So, dollars contributed to projects with their stamp will be doubled by that foundation!
Please give what you can this Fall. Even a $5 donation will help. With the school year beginning, this is a great time to get involved in supporting our future leaders via their education. Even better, you get to interact with them and hear feedback from the teachers!
