Domain Registrar Failure

My brother, Michael, asks a very good question, which I do not know the answer to.
What happens to our domain assets in the event that our registrar goes out of business?
Because of the fact that our Whois info is posted everywhere, I think we may have the ability to claim the domain somewhere else, but I do not know what the process would be and what sort of risk is involved here. We have kept our domains at fairly large registrars in hopes of security, but what would happen if GoDaddy went under? Chaos for sure.
Please comment if you have any answers on this issue.

This has happened to some names I’ve acquired through Snapnames. What wound up happening was ICANN reassigned those names to another registrar keeping the previous ownership intact (me).
Tony is exactly right, no risk to the registrants after registerfly
Maybe there is a market for an SIPC-type insurance program?
There definitely is a market for insurance on domains, Nutz. The only place I know that is currently offering domain insurance is DomainTools, here:

But, while that deal sounds enticing, I think accurately priced insurance from an actuary and backed by a large financial insurance company would be more reliable. The domain industry assets are vary large, trade in size actively, and the market for insurance premiums there is completely untapped. I would love to discuss more on this idea.
