Domain Industry News

There have been several new developments in the past several days in the domain industry.  Domains and the Internet have been very high profile in January, as Sammy mentions, and I imagine their exposure will only increase in 2008.  The great thing about the domain industry is that news flows fast and freely thanks to the experts in the industry understanding the Internet better than anyone and taking advantage of the best technology to blog and share with everyone.

Taking a step back, I was discussing with my brother, Michael, recently about how to improve traffic to GreenTaxi (other than improving content).  Traffic slowly has slowly increased over time and we realized that maybe it is not necessary to go after the traffic.  The content on GreenTaxi covers three main themes, finance (green money), the green environment, and the domain industry (a “green”, meaning new, industry).  By not focusing on a niche product or industry, I confuse people and do not provide a focus that readers need.  However, I do believe that in voicing my views and news on multiple subjects, so I am just going to hope that I find a smaller audience that enjoys this specific mix of topics.

To follow up on the Domain news, here are a few of the top headlines that have come through recently:

  • Microsoft to buy Yahoo: Microsoft has announced a $31 bid for Yahoo, amounting to a valuation of $44.6 billion, in what will be the largest Technology takeover in history.  I have to agree with many of the analysts and money managers who are saying that this deal is a mistake for Microsoft.  In my opinion there is a lot of innovative technology out there that they could purchase for the same amount that would be much better than buying this broken business based on a portal business plan that went out of style in the 90′s.   Most amazingly, TheDomains.com just predicted the resurgence acquisition two days ago. Yahoo
  • Domain Tasting Almost Over:  With two announcements recently, we will finally see the end of one of the several problems in the domain industry, domain tasting.  The process of buying names, capturing ad revenue on them for 5 days, and then returning them within the 5 day trial period has been one of the shadows cast over domaining for a while now.  With Google deciding to not pay tasted domains and a follow up ICANN announcement to cease tasting altogether, we have one less scam available in the domaining world.
  • FreePorn.com sold for $4 million:  Yes, this is quite possibly the largest domain name (non-business) sale for a two word domain.
  • New York Times article on Domaining:  This article, “Coins in the New Realm“, is a great headline article explaining the growth and potential of domaining.
