IDN Potential
This recent CNN article about International Domain Name (IDN) potential is worth the brief read. However, I do not think they do a great job of portraying the situation or the potential for IDN’s. Marchex has based their entire public company on the local internet, yet they do not seem to have embraced local languages yet. Frank Schilling points out the decrease in smaller languages and the globalization of English. In the end, however, there are so many foreign (non-English) language speakers out there that it is foolish to not try to embrace the internet for this massive amount of people.
Frank is correct in that the entire situation is a mess right now, as they have not decided what to do with the TLD’s (currently domains can be in another language, but the TLD, or “.com” extension, cannot). Hopefully decisions are made sooner rather than later. The technology exits to do whatever they choose, however the politics are preventing anything from moving foward.
